After two ill-fated seasons with Kurt Roper running the show, Will Muschamp turned his South Carolina offense completely over to Bryan McClendon and Dan Werner this offseason.

Both hires made sense for various reasons. McClendon keeps continuity and high energy on the Gamecock staff while Werner brings years of experience running some of the better offenses in recent SEC history to Columbia. After spending last season as an analyst with Alabama, after leaving Ole Miss, Werner is now tasked with helping incorporate an aggressive offense that features plenty of tempo.

If the scheme works well, South Carolina could be poised for a huge season in 2018. During his Thursday media availability, Werner was asked about the Gamecocks transition to the new offense under the two South Carolina coaches.

“A lot of the things are things I’ve done in my past, things (McClendon) wanted to do — didn’t last year, but there was a lot to carry over from last year, too, because there were a lot of good plays that went in,” Werner said. “What we did was talk about what the players liked, what we liked from last year — keep that, and (consider) what do we know that we need to add to it?”

After spending several seasons working in the SEC West, the jump to Columbia working for a coach he was unfamiliar with could have made for a difficult transition for Werner. However, he claims that’s not been the case whatsoever this offseason.

Here is what Werner had to say about working with McClendon to overhaul the South Carolina offense.

“It’s been awesome. That was one of the things when I came here; I wanted to make sure I got with him, made sure we were a good fit,” Werner said. “Like I said, it’s been really good. The thing is with him, he’s not only smart but he’s very demanding and the players respect him. You put all of that together and you’ve got a good football coach.”

Hiring Wolf, Werner and promoting BM to OC have been Will's top 3 coaching moves on offense.  I fully expect healthy dividend raises going forward :)
