David Porter/anyone, has 2014 A'ja Wilson (6-6) (Heathwood Hall), who is the #1 girls highschool player in the country for 2014, been on campus to visit the Gamecocks this season? Do she have a school/college that she is favoring right now? Do Coach Staley and the Gamecocks have a great chance of getting a commitment from A'ja Wilson? There is a great article and video below of A'ja Wilson playing in a game this season against post player Jatari White (6-3)(Providence Day Highschool), who is also one of the top 5 girls highschool players in the country for 2014. Jatari White plays at the same highschool that current Gamecocks freshman Tiffany Mitchell played at. Tiffany Mitchell made the SEC All-Freshman team this season playing for Coach Staley and the Gamecocks. If Coach Staley can land BOTH A'ja Wilson and Jatari White that would be OUTSTANDING. The video below showing A'ja Wilson and Jatari White playing against one another is great. Hopefully both can be teammates in college playing for Coach Staley and the Gamecocks.

I'm not sure about visits but I feel like she has been to campus before. As for a leader, I honestly believe South Carolina is out front with her right now.

:dancincocky: Great news! Since Coach Staley became head coach of the Gamecocks she and her coaching staff have been locking down the state's top girl highschool basketball players and keeping them instate/home playing with the Gamecocks. Instate highschool players like Alegisha Welch, Khadijah Sessions, Asia Dozier, have helped to turnaround the Gamecocks women basketball program and now McDonalds All-American center Alaina Coates will be on campus next season playing for Coach Staley and the Gamecocks. The future is very bright for the Lady Gamecocks. It would be great to add a special player like A'ja Wilson and Jatari White to the Gamecocks women basketball team.

There is a GREAT video of Jatarie White below. Imagine Coach Staley having post player Jatarie White playing along side McDonalds All-America center Alaina Coates and having A'ja Wilson at the 3 position (small forward position), that would = Gamecocks SEC CHAMPIONS & NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. :) Hopefully Jatarie White was able to visit the Gamecocks and see her former highschool teammate NC Miss Basketball award winner Tiffany Mitchell play this season.  Tiffany Mitchell made the SEC All Freshman team.

Fan, I agree with you on Jatari White playing alongside Alana Coates would be sweet.  Coach Staley is the real deal and knows how to evaluate talent and develop it on the court.  This program continues to improve with Coach Staley in charge and I believe very good things are in store for the Lady Gamecocks program.

Jatarie White, who is only a junior, has been named the NC Gatorade Player of the Year. It would be great if Coach Staley was able to get commitments from both 5-star A'ja Wilson and 5-star Jatarie White.

School: Providence Day School (Charlotte, N.C.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Forward
Height: 6-foot-3

Athletic achievement: She led the Chargers to a 27-4 record and their eighth North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 3A state championship in nine seasons. A three-time NCISAA Class 3A All-State selection, White averaged 19.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 1.8 steals per game. White recorded 24 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in a 44-28, title-clinching victory against Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School (Rabun Gap, Ga.). She participated in the 2012 USA Basketball Women’s U17 World Championship Team Trials this past summer.

Academic excellence: White has maintained a B average.

Exemplary character: An active member of her school’s Cultural Alliance Club, she has volunteered locally at a retirement facility and Charlotte’s Second Harvest Food Bank.

HoopGurlz has a new article about 2014 5-star Jatarie White (6-4). One thing that got my attention in the article is she said that if a school that is recruiting her wants her to play the 5 position (center), she probably will not go there. If Jatarie White commits to the Gamecocks she won't have to play the 5 position (center) because the Gamecocks have signed freshman 2013 McDonalds All-American center Alaina Coates, so she would be a GREAT fit playing for the Gamecocks and close to home. She is a team player and a hard worker.

espnw_e_white01jr_576.jpg

Jatarie White is widely regarded as best girls' basketball player in North Carolina. But in a critical 3A Independent Schools playoff game this past season, it was the junior star who was imploring a freshman to shoot the ball.

Sure enough, her younger teammate's points were instrumental, as Providence Day (Charlotte, N.C.), outscored Cary (N.C.) Academy 17-2 in the fourth quarter en route to a 31-21 semifinal win.

"Basketball's a team sport," White said. "It's five girls, not one."

A star like that with an attitude like that makes things much easier for coach Josh Springer.

"A lot of kids that are elite basketball players, they want to do everything themselves," Springer said. "I think the best ones have great talent but they understand they have to empower teammates with less talent for us to achieve our ultimate team goals."

White was named North Carolina's state player of the year by both the Associated Press and Gatorade after averaging 19.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.2 blocks and 1.8 steals and leading Providence Day to the 3A Independent Schools championship, where she posted 24 points and 12 rebounds in a 44-28 win over Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.).

Also important points in the article below:

College coaches are now circling as White starts to look to the next level.

The lefty has taken unofficial visits to South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Miami and Florida State. She hopes to narrow her search this summer.

"I don't want to go too far away from home," White said. "Also I'm looking for a coaching staff that I get along with but [who] will make me better. And I don't want to be a [center], so if they have me as a 5 I probably won't go there."

The new SEC Network will help make the SEC the top college women basketball conference in the country with the national exposure that the network will bring to SEC women basketball. The new SEC Network is a game changer. It will launch 2014 during A'ja Wilson and Jatarie White's first year in college if they both commit to the Gamecocks. Coach Staley will have the Gamecocks as the top team in the SEC. Coach Staley is a competitor and she plays to win on the basketball court and in recruiting. Coach Staley has the special ability to relate to the top highschool girl players because she was the top highschool girls player in the country and the USA Today national highschool player of the year her senior year in highschool and a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame player as a college All American, an Olympic 3 time Gold Medal winner, and WNBA All-Star. What todays young highschool girl players want to accomplish during their basketball careers Coach Staley has already accomplished it ALL and she is the best coach/teacher of women basketball in the country.

2014 A'ja Wilson (6-6) (Heathwood Hall) has been selected to play on the USA Basketball Women's U19 World Championship team. She is the YOUNGEST player on the team. The article is below. A'ja Wilson has a great chance of being named the national highschool girls player of the year next season. She is the REAL deal. She will look GREAT playing in a Gamecock basketball uniform along with Jatarie White. If Coach Staley get commitments from those two players to go along with the talent that she has already coming into the Gamecocks women basketball program, she will win the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. A'ja Wilson is the clear undisputed #1 highschool player in the country in her class, just like current Gamecock All-American DE Jadeveon Clowney was the #1 player in the country his senior highschool football season at instate South Point Highschool.

There is a great recent video/article about A'ja Wilson and her father below. Her father is right she will be a target on the basketball court because she is the #1 player in the country, just like Gamecock football player Jadaveon Clowney will be a target every game he plays this season because he is the #1 college player in the country and the projected top overall #1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The great players take pride in being #1. A'ja Wilson and Jatarie White would be GREAT playing together for the Lady Gamecocks basketball team in Coach Staley's system.

The NBA Miami Heat basketball team won BACK-TO BACK championships because of their "BIG 3" of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh. Coach Staley can have her "BIG 3" in the 2014 recruiting class made of HoopGurlz 5-star players:

  • 5-star Kaydra Duckett (Already a Gamecock commit) (Version of Dwayne Wade: He was already in Miami when LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined him to win CHAMPIONSHIPS)
  • 5-star A'ja Wilson (Version of LeBron James: The Top #1 player in the country)
  • 5-star Jatarie White (Version of Chris Bosh: Power Forward)

A'ja Wilson, and Jatarie White can join Kaydra Duckett and win CHAMPIONSHIPS in college playing together for Coach Staley's Gamecocks women basketball team, just like good friends LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Dwayne Wade and won multiple championships. Basketball is a TEAM game/sport, it takes having more than just "ONE" great player to win championships. Separate they were each great NBA all-star players but playing together on the same team they became CHAMPIONS and champions become LEGENDS.

There are rumors that Jatarie White could make an early commitment this summer. If true I hope she joins her former highschool teammate Miss NC Basketball & Parade All-American Tiffany Mitchell in Columbia playing with the Gamecocks. I have seen Jatarie White ranked as high as the #5 player in the country for 2014. Tiffany Mitchell committed early to Coach Staley when she was going through the recruiting process.

A'ja Wilson is SHINING on the USA team. She is the YOUNGEST player on the team. In a second round game she led the USA team with 20 points. There is a recent article below about her. The positive energy that an A'ja Wilson & Jatarie White commitment to the Gamecocks women basketball program would create would be INCREDIBLE/off the charts/all-time high.

Aja Wilson and her USA teammates win GOLD!!! The score in the U19 gold medal game USA 61 France 28. USA,USA,USA!!! I hope Coach Staley put the recruiting full-court press on BOTH A'ja Wilson and Jatarie White. Both can have historic college careers playing with the Gamecocks and win MANY championships playing for Coach Staley in the SEC.

Yeah Fan, if Coach Staley can sign both Jatari White and A'ja Wilson the Lady G's would be unstoppable.  The talent already on the team and adding these 2 young ladies would elevate this team to elite status.  Keeping my ear to the ground to hear some good news from them!  Bring them home Coach!

:) A'ja Wilson made an unofficial visit to see the Gamecocks last Thursday (day of unc football game) according to the article below! Coach Staley has been busy this summer with her trip to Africa with former President Clinton representing the WNBA and now she is preparing for the Naismith Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony, but she is still RECRUITING!!! :)

Fan,

Thanks for all of the basketball updates !! With all the emphasis on football at this time of the year it's easy to forget that our two outstanding basketball coaches (and their staffs) are working over time to return Carolina to the elite basketball status that we once enjoyed....keep the news coming ...
